Charles Pizzi to receive Founders Award at 2019 Night For Blue
The nonprofit Philadelphia Police Foundation today has named Charles P. Pizzi, Chairman of the Independence Health Group and a longtime leader of Philadelphia civic and community initiatives, as the 2019 recipient of its Founders Award to be presented at “A Night for Blue,” the Foundation’s annual recognition event, on Tuesday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ballroom at the Franklin, 834 Chestnut St. in Center City Philadelphia.
“The Philadelphia Police Foundation is pleased to announce that we will honor Charles Pizzi with our Founders Award in recognition of his many years of support and concern for advancing corporate, business and civic endeavors in Philadelphia that have included public safety,” said Maureen S. Rush, President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Vice President for Public Safety and Superintendent of Police at the University of Pennsylvania.
“Our prestigious Founders Award, which, since its inception two years ago, has been awarded to John Binswanger and Patrick J. O’Connor, allows us to say thank you to outstanding Philadelphians who share the Foundation’s mission of supporting the law enforcement efforts of the 6,500 men and women in blue of the Philadelphia Police Department,” Rush added.
Pizzi was elected Chairman of the Independence Health Group, parent of Independence Blue Cross on July 1. He had been a member of Independence Blue Cross’s Board since 1991 and served as Vice Chair prior to his elevation to Chairman, succeeding Walter D’Alessio who retired. Independence Blue Cross has supported the Philadelphia Police Foundation in the past by funding the purchase of bulletproof vests for Philadelphia Police officers.
Pizzi has long been involved in civic, business and industrial aspects of Philadelphia life. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, including serving as its Chairman from 2010-11. He was President and CEO of Tasty Baking Co. from 2002 until its merger with Flowers Foods, Inc., in 2011. From 1989-2002, Pizzi was President and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and served as Philadelphia’s Commerce Director from 1986-88.
In addition to the Independence Health Group, he currently serves on the boards of Brandywine Realty Trust, Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust, FS Energy & Power Fund, FS Global Credit Opportunities Fund, WHYY and Drexel University.
