For more than two decades the PPF has provided life-saving equipment, vital technology, advanced training, and critical crime-reducing initiatives for the PPD.
Our current funding priorities include, reducing the gun violence epidemic, supporting Officer wellness programs and police accountability initiatives, providing strategic and advanced training at all levels of the PPD and providing engagement opportunities between the Philadelphia Police and the youth of the city.
The PPD’s Mounted Unit horses are aging out rapidly with a vital need for younger, more agile equines for the Unit. The PPF stepped in to fund two who arrived in late 2022 and two additional arriving in the Spring of 2023. Two additional horses (making a total of 6 in the past 12 months) are scheduled to be added later in 2023.
The PPF is stepping in to fill the gap and cover the costs of training for two (2) Tactical Flight Officers in obtaining their FAA Rotary Commercial Pilot License.
Police Bicycles and Bike Patrol Uniforms
The Philadelphia Police Foundation will purchase eighty (80) fully equipped police bicycles and officer uniforms to support the staffing of bike officers for critical commercial areas in the city.
Bomb-Sniffing K9 Officers
PPD’s bomb-sniffing canine Bane died suddenly this past summer, leaving PPD with an unexpected need for a new highly trained canine. The PPF was able to step up and purchase a new K9 Officer for the Department.
Children of Police Scholarship (COPS) Fund
In partnership with the Connelly Foundation, the COPS (Children of Police Scholarship) Fund was established in 2016 for children of fallen or permanently injured officers.
Police Customer Service Project — L.A.S.T.
The PPF is funding the refreshing and expansion of L.A.S.T. (listen, acknowledge, solve, thank you) — a Police Customer Service Project — that began in 2015.
New Motorcycles for Highway Patrols
A significant number of The Philadelphia Police Department’s Highway Patrol fleet are in need of replacement of condemned motorcycles and motorcycles in disrepair due to age and the cost of repairs.
Training for Firearm and DNA Examiners
The PPF agreed to fund training for these eight (8) new hires as Firearms Examiners. The PPF is also funding training for seven (7) newly hired Forensic Scientist trainees in DNA Analysis.
Officer ‘Appreciation Days’
The PPF believes all Philadelphia Officers should feel appreciated. In 2022, we created ‘Appreciation Days’ as a new annual tradition.
Shop with a Cop
Shop with a Cop is a national program pairing police officers with children to afford them a better Christmas. The program promotes synergy and partnership between the police and the communities they serve and helps foster a positive relationship between police and our precious children.
